One of the most festive and enjoyable parts of Purim is dressing up in costumes. Whether you choose to wear a Purim-themed outfit or not, Eichler’s has a costume for you. We also have accompanying graggers, Purim gift baskets, and books to help you bring the Purim story to life. Purim starts on February 23rd, so you have a little over a month to get everything you need in order.
The idea of costumes originated with 15th century Italian Jews and spread from there. The practice was said to be influenced by carnival and masquerade style events. Some people draw an allegory from the way G-d disguised himself in the Purim story and wear costumes to honor that. Others attribute costume wearing to the charity associated with Purim. People in costume can freely accept and give charity without wounding pride and respect. Purim is a fun and fascinating holiday precisely because it has many meanings and constant evolutions. Although not the holiest of days on the Jewish calendar, it may be the most fun!
So prepare the hamentashen and decide who you want to dress up as for Purim 2013. We have everything you need to throw a great Purim in our holiday store!
